Walden and wigwams

"In Wildness is the preservation of the World." Henry David Thoreau, "Walking" (1862).

just got home from an interview with the Toledo Metroparks for an historical internship. as far as I can figure it involves dressing like a Native American for school kids and groups along with teaching people how to build a wigwam....
(according to the job description...)
"Wear and maintain historical clothing/equipment"
"Create and present wigwam programs for schools, children's groups, etc."
"Create and present historical characters related to the Battle of Fallen Timbers and American Indians of the Maumee Valley"

would be pretty funny, not sure dressing like an Indian chief is what I envisioned when I got my BS and (any day now) MA in history....but hell beats the bookstore

interview went fine I guess, successfully avoided calling Native Americans "Indians" or "redskins"

the interview was at Wildwood Metropark...one the prettiest spots in NW Ohio, I took a walk last week and deer bounded out in front of me and kinda stared at me. took another long walk today....it was beautiful. at the risk of sounding too much like Thoreau, I think it is important to get back to nature once in awhile...refresh the human soul...lame I know but it really is nice to get to a peaceful spot like that away from people and all the trappings of modern society..

I'm not moving out into a cabin around Walden Pond or anything, but I think I will take a similar walk every week so to get that feeling again

as I was sitting on a bench looking at the nature around me and generally contemplating life, a very cute girl walked by with her little dog. she said hi and asked how I was doing and smiled....and I am sure I caught her looking back at me as she continued on
now we all know I have no game whatsoever but I decided what the hell, so I got up and trying not to look like a stalker and trying to think of a good way to start a conversation (only thing I could think of was saying that I thought her little yappy dog was cute)....but before I could catch up she had already met up with what I assume was her bf...

just my luck these days....any chance that was just her gay friend who goes to the park with her?

funny funny Mike

went out to dinner and a movie with JK, Cheryl, and Mike....saw Casanova (yeah kinda lame but it was funny and entertaining enough...Heath Ledger is kind of a girl though, and I haven't even see that Brokeback Mountain movie)

anyway after I dropped off JK at her house, Rex made a funny observation. he said that even though we still act the same around each other after we did the just be friends thing, JK looks alot happier now....

it was funny, I laughed when he said it, JK laughed when I told her...it does seem pretty true and happy anyway you can get it is good...just not sure what it says about me :-) but for once, I won't dwell on it and I'll just laugh instead

random (drunken) musings

had a great holiday....saw my older brother Justin and his wife for a week...finally realized that he is not the jerk I've always thought he was

Brandon is gone, still hasn't suck in...cause he just left yesterday, and I'm being a "sap" apparently...probably am, but he is my best friend who has always been around..

had a strangely fun NYE with JK, Cheryl, and Rex...went to a club, almost got crushed by the drunken crowd, someone poured a beer down my back, and I somehow cut my thumb...but I had a good time

I'm kinda buzzing tonight....watching the Rose Bowl by myself after I had someone work for me tonight so I could watch the game with my dad... but something much more important came up...

my mom is back in the hospital tonight with yet another high fever/infection...no word yet how long she'll be there or what it is this time...but last time she was in for 7 weeks, too much to hope for just overnight this time?

watching the Rose Bowl....Texas vs. USC, its halftime and I still have no idea who I am rooting for....
I usually root against teams going for a repeat, and USC is going for its 3rd straight national championship....but I can't root for a team from Texas (I hate the state of Texas...give it back to Mexico already!!)
thought I'd decide it like most knowledgable sports fans often do and pull for whichever school has the hotter chicks....but USC and Texas are both known for having some of the most gorgeous coeds west of Ypsilanti, MI (kidding about that last part obviously)
thought I'd go for USC cause they're cheerleaders are about the hottest around...but then I saw the Texas ones and they're wearing chaps!!!
next since I was in a University (sort of) marching band for 4 years I'd decide by the bands: the Texas band has one of the most ridiculous uniforms ever, they look like the gay orange cowboys I imagine are in that Brokeback movie, and the USC band dresses like they are ancient Greek soldiers...
but then the USC band played "Beat It" at halftime, and the Texas band played crappy Beatles songs...
so I have no idea...but there's a whole other half and I'm too buzzing here alone to really care...GO SOMEONE!!!

that's all I have....bye for now
