Eastern....the Harvard of the MAC?

Top 10 Schools Where Students (Almost) Never Study
Article provided by The Princeton Review

2. Ohio University-Athens (Athens, Ohio)
The university's "very laid-back and friendly" undergrads can "usually be found in sweats and flip-flops generally all year round. We have a very casual atmosphere." It's "the perfect mixture of business with pleasure," students tell us, adding, "We get the work done on the weekdays so we can party hard on the weekends." Most agree that OU is "a rip-roaring good-time party school."

Students who considered Ohio State also looked at Indiana University-Bloomington, Kent State University, Miami University, and Penn State University.

7. Florida State University (Tallahassee, Florida)
"It is all about having a good time while getting a great education" at FSU, and most students figure out how to juggle both tasks. Undergraduates report that Seminoles "are very focused on classes during the week. However, when the weekends roll around, it is all about football (in the fall) and partying! FSU students know how to have a good time, and there is always a party going on."

Knew there was a reason I wanted to go to OU

Not surprisingly Eastern Michigan did not make the list...as it was hardly a fun place, as much as I loved it...
Even less surprising, my girlfriend has attended atleast two of the schools mentioned here. :-)

(milestone note: according to blogspot this is my 69th posting!!!)hehehe...

next Hens game will be in Hell

After a pretty uneventful Perrysburg weekend, some of the OH/MI gang went to the Mud Hens game this afternoon. It was UNGODLY hot to begin with. Must have been pushing 90, no breeze at all, and the sun beating down right on our seats. I got fried...you know it's bad when 2 hours in the sun gives me a shirt tan again. I could tell that the girls (Jenny, Emily and Kristin) DID NOT want to be there, or Mike for that matter, same thing though :-)
*Corey annoyingly rooted for Louisville (and said it wrong all day) because they are the lowly Reds Triple-A team. He almost got in a fight with a mentally-handicapped gentleman sitting in our row who was pulling for the Hens.
*He also provided the most excitement to the Hens lose when he bet me, with 15-1 odds, that the Hens 9th place hitter Brandon Harper would hit a HR to tie the game. Harper didn't but it was a funny at bat with Corey and I shouting with each pitch while the rest of the stadium was silent. I would have pulled it $90 if that no talent ass-clown would have drilled one.
*Joe provided the keys-to-hell comment of the day when he commented about some guys who went to a private school in Dayton as being "retarded".....at this comment, the retarded Hens fan got up and quickly went to the end of the row.
*Had to ride to the Irish pub in Corey's song as he sang along with Journey and Boys II Men (insert Corey is gay joke here). Then as I opened the door at a red light to run away, some soccer mom got scared and locked the doors to her SUV next to me.
*at the pub we kind of all ganged up to make fun of Corey, with the help of the cool waiter who said "ladies first" and started to fill up Corey's glass first. Though Corey did have enough moxie to ask the said waiter for the phone number of the hot hostess.
kinda fun, kinda miserable day...enjoyed it though...especially the Pub. Thanks to Joe and Corey for coming down!

damn, greedy Canucks

bad news from our neighbors to the North that I meant to share with everyone....especially Chach who said he was SURE that you could get Steam Whistle beer (my personal heroine) in the States....

Greetings Adam,

Thank you so much for your praise of Steam Whistle Pilsner. It's so rewarding hearing positive feedback. We particularly appreciate your effort in tracking it down in local establishments during your stay here.

It's great to hear that our friends south of our border have taken a liking to our beloved beer. While we've grown since our beginning four years ago, we are still a very small company with limited distribution resources. I'd love to be able to report that you will be able to find our green bottles at a store near you, but unfortunately, Steam Whistle is not available in the US. It can be complicated for newer Canadian breweries to distribute into the US. Aside from that, we're struggling as it is to make enough beer for our thirsty fans in Canada! Hopefully someday in the future we'll be able to share with our American friends!

In the meantime, though, if you ever take the one hour trip to cross the border into Windsor, Ontario, you'll be able to pick up Steam Whistle at stores there. We're not too far away after all!

Thanks again for your support. We wish you all the best in Toledo!

Cheers,

Ellen McKinney

though I love the fact that she signed off with "cheers"...hehe....Canadians

un-American (?) baseball fan

Pretty quiet weekend around T-town....had to open at the bookstore friday and saturday...which I hate
went out with Cheryl, Jen and Emily to the Maumee Street Fair on Friday night...won an inflatable baseball bat (which I must have left at Cheryl's) for throwing a blazing 46mph fastball...
Saturday: went to the new Irish pub at the mall which was very cool...though I was crashing too much to really enjoy it...it was supposed to be a big crowd but almost everyone bailed but Jen, Chief and Kristin (Krystin)
today I have done absolutely nothing except watch the Cubs get killed..I HATE sundays

now a random rant: when Brandon and I went to our second straight Mud Hens game on Thursday night there was some weird Elvis impersonator who insisted on singing "God Bless America" in place of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch....
I fucking hate this new trend to baseball....first off...its the goddamn 7th inning stretch!!!! Sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame"!!!! it's tradition...not a fake tradition like this is turning into!! if you want to sing both fine....but "God Bless America" should never REPLACE it.....
plus its not that great a song. Its really not...sure some of the words are pretty, but overall it's simply not that great. I've never learned the words to it like other "American" songs...not sure how anyone knows them actually
It's also just a song...it has no more overall meaning to this country than Lee Greenwood's obnoxious "God Bless the USA". It IS NOT the national anthem. I don't feel compelled to stand for it, even less to remove my hat (which I didn't). We get one national anthem...and that ain't it. (though it might be more musical than our national anthem...based on an English drinking song)
Does this make me un-American? Are the right-wing patriotism cops about to bust my door open and haul me off for having musical taste? I know this got started because of 9/11 at the Yankees games to help heal the country..and that's fine...I do have a soul (contrary to popular belief) but now it's simply turned into another bad thing the fucking Yankees have brought onto all of baseball....
don't even get me started on the whole God concept in the song (which I chose to ignore this time)
well off to save a spotted owl, plot the overthrow of the straight white male and read my Karl Marx!

near death on Lake Shore Drive

a brief (brief as I can be) recounting of last weekend's journey to Chicago with Brandon and Jenny....

Thursday August 11: we left Perrysburg about 9:30 and headed off for Chicago....stopped in South Bend, IN for pizza at the Pizza King
-got into the Windy City around 1 and decided to check out the Adler Planetarium which none of us had ever been to before. It's next to the Field Museum and the Shedd Aquarium which I've seen half a dozen times. It was pretty cool...except that it POURED on us while we walked to the building, so 20 mins of being absolutely soaked to the bone. Then we had to go straight into the air conditioned theater for the lame show we paid for. Excruciating! It took most of the visit to dry off. It was all good though...Jen got her astronaut ice cream that I had to mail order last time.
-then drove with surprising ease to the hotel, a Days Inn right across from the Lincoln Park Zoo. The two double room we reserved they didn't have so we got put in an executive suite with a king a pullout sofa, great view and 2 bathrooms! Very nice...though no Hotel 71.
-Chief and I went walking through some posh North Chicago neighborhoods in a vain search for an El station...very cool walk with lots of "scenery" (and the views were good too) but it took an hour to get there and back..a consistent theme of the two days...pointless walking
-more pointless walking on our way to find a different El station to get to Wrigleyville so I could see the bar I wanted to go to...Goose Island Wrigleyville. Very cool pub with great food and some of my favorite beer around. Tried the sampler because I can only get a couple of their beers in Toledo. My favorite was the Ryno (named in honor of recent HOFer Ryne Sandberg)..Jen and Brandon liked it alot too...I teased Chief cause the Cardinal fan drank a beer named after a Cub. The bar was kinda lame though...they stopped serving food before 10 and they said last call before 11...on a Thursday night!!! Not sure about that.
-stumbled back to the El and the hotel

Friday August 12: got up, got ready with all my Cubs gear....decided to check out the Lincoln Park Zoo across the street for all of 20 mins...but hell it was free. Got to see camels, apes, and weird gazelle things.
-the set off with everything we needed for a 20 min walk south the what we finally discovered was the closest El station to Wrigley...everything we needed except for the tickets to the game in my trunk. Of course we had paid for the El ride and were on the platform before I remembered them....Jenny and Brandon thought I was kidding, even after I started back up the steps for the street. Walked back while they laughed at me and I raged at myself. Took a cab to get to Wrigley. so $1.75 for the El ride for three people and $15 for the taxi just to go 2 miles to the game. I'm an idiot.
-the game was unbelievably great!! (except the Cards and Chief) the Cubs won 4-1 behind brilliant pitching by Carlos Zambrano, Kerry Wood, and Ryan Dempster and 2 runs (including an HR) by Michael Barrett...Jen's new favorite player. She even bought a Barrett jersey tshirt. Lots of fun had by all....except the Cardinal fans I guess..but who cares? The Cubs finally won in person for me after three loses.
-after the game we took the El (luckily the station is right behind the ballpark) downtown to eat at the Rainforest Cafe like Brandon wanted to. Pretty good meal and we got glasses that light up like strob lights that I intend to drink beer out of at Chach's.
-then walked a few blocks to get sundaes at Ghirardelli chocolate shop cause Jenny and Chief are obsessed with sundaes all of the sudden. But they were good.
-we then took the El back to near our hotel, walked back to the car, paid $25 for parking....and then the real adventure began.

-we got lost a couple of times trying to get back on Lake Shore Drive south out of the city...though there are apparently several Lake Shore Drives in the same small area and we had to turn around several times. taxi almost hit us..And yes I did turn left into apparently on-coming traffic, narrowly missing having an SUV where Jenny was sitting next to me...BUT I am positive I had a left turn arrow and I just followed the guy in front of me...but yes I almost killed my gf...my bad.
Side Note: this is where Jenny would make fun of my navigational skills ("I went on a little jaunt to chicago with my boy and his brother....which further showed me his lack of navigational skills.
but hey- he tries." for instance) and yes I am willing to admit my ineptitude when we went to Chitown in March....but here I was driving!! its the passenger seat's job to navigate, not the driver....especially when the driver has much less real city driving experience than the passenger!!!! of course Brandon helped alot by sitting quietly in the back....tool
-after missing another exit (driver's fault or map girl's?) finally got out of the city but had to take a lovely, scenic, hilarious, harrowing detour through South Chicago...the only white people in miles.

All in all a great, amazing trip to Chicago with two of my favorite people! thanks guys. Sorry this wasn't even in the same solar system as brief....speaking of which, Jenny, got any more astronaut ice cream?

Happy Adam vs. Moanin' Adam

Your Hidden Talent
You are a great communicator. You have a real way with words.
You're never at a loss to explain what you mean or how you feel.
People find it easy to empathize with you, no matter what your situation.
When you're up, you make everyone happy. But when you're down, everyone suffers.

and bulldoze Wrigley while you're at it

*****Cubs Rant Alert, Cubs Rant Alert*****

the goddamn Chicago Cubs are done...and they know it. They have packed it in for the season. They have all quit and it is painfully obvious.
I am watching the most pathetic Cubs game I have seen in well...like 2 days. The Cubs were tied 3-3 with the mediocre Cincy Reds at home...gave up a home run in the 8th and then 4 more runs in the 9th!! They gave up 4 runs when they should have been thinking about tying it up. Two errors, more than a dozen misplaced balls...pathetic at bats against minor league pitching and now a 7 game losing streak....
7 game losing streak when they should be trying to put a winning streak together to chase the NL wild card.....a fucking joke

Dusty Baker is gone...maybe its not fair, Dusty is a great manager and he had brought a different attitude to Wrigley...for awhile. Its over now...they are back to being losers...though no longer lovable...just losers. Baker has been unable to do anything with this horrible bunch and his team has quit on him and when a team quits a manager is done...

GM Jim Hendry should be fired but won't for not doing anything in the offseason to make the team better and then doing NOTHING during the season to help the team...

even Derek Lee is in a slump and seems to not care anymore..so much for the triple crown and NL MVP (which will go to Albert Pujols because the press can't get off his nuts)

FUCK THE CUBS!!!!....I know I've had a few beers while watching this joke of a baseball team today, but I don't even really want to go see them get stomped at Wrigley friday by the Cards...anyone want my ticket?

Forever Young

Congrats to my favorite 49er of all time and the hero of my childhood Steve Young on his entry in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and to Dan Marino, and to the memories of Fritz Pollard and Benny Friedman. Great speech....football just isn't the same without #8 scrambling around Candlestick Park.

Eastern Eagles...hats off to you

while at work I checked out a CBS Sports College football guide. It ranked every Division 1A school in predicted order of finish this year. My alma mater, a perennial football power...oh wait, I meant joke...is usually ranked in the 110s with other fine schools like Buffalo, Rice and Temple. This year, while Eastern isn't supposed to win the MAC, the experts believe it will be respectable with an awesome offense. But I brought this up to tell my WSJP friends what number Eastern was ranked....69th!!!!!!!!!!! hehehe..How friggin cool is that!

a side note to my pretty gf: keep open Sat. October 1. Your Kent State Golden Flashers...uhh..Flashes will be playing my Eastern Michigan Eagles at venerable Rynearson Stadium in Ypsilanti, MI. Whoever's school that win gets bragging rights in our relationship.

Steroids in the Viagara maybe?

*****Cubs Rant Alert, Cubs Rant Alert*****

three bits of good news for the Chicago Cubs, one bit of bad news for baseball...

the Cubbies made the biggest move on a pathetic trade deadline day by trading for Pirates OF Matt Lawton. Hopefully he will provide the spark at leadoff that the Cubs have been missing since Kenny Lofton left for the Yankees. Guess this means Corey "Strikeout" Patterson's days in Chicago are over...oh well...better this way since Cubs fans are getting hoarse from booing him day after day. The only negative to this trade is that the Cubs traded away my new favorite player Jody Gerut (who had a history degree from Stanford, proving that you CAN do something with a history degree...as long as you can hit a 95mph fastball)

more good news...the Cubs get reinforcements in their probably hopeless quest for the playoffs when Nomar Garciaparra, Kerry Wood, and reliever Scott Williamson all come back on friday. Nomar will replace Neifi Perez (sorry again Neifi) and Wood and Williamson will bolster the horrible bullpen. Still don't think the Cubs have enough this year to beat out the Astros and Marlins for the wildcard though.

congrats to Ryne Sandberg on his induction into the Hall of Fame this weekend. Great player, classy guy....a baseball player that baseball players respect and fans love. Way to go Ryno!

Speaking of Cooperstown, say goodbye to it for Rafael Palmiero. Testing positive and being suspended for steroids just months after he vigorously denied before Congress that he had ever used them. Oops. Way to kill that 3000 hit, Cooperstown buzz. Should have stuck to the penis pills, Raffy. Palmiero claims that he never took steroids intentionally and that he has no idea how they might have gotten into his system....umm..right. And Barry Bonds head got that big naturally.
