bah humbug!

ahh...my third Christmas season (or Holiday season just to piss off the Fox "News" crew) working at the bookstore...
trying very hard to not hate xmas this year, it gets tougher with every shift though..
today I swear to god I met everyone who lives in the Greater Toledo area...because they were all in line at the store....
dumb people do make the holidays slightly more bearable...

real phone call I had last week....
Adam: Barnes and Noble, this is Adam, how can I help you?
Dumb lady customer: yeah, I need a couple books for my husband...I need the Iliad and the Odyssey
Adam: ok...
Dumb lady: I think his name is Homer but I don't know his last name
Adam: (silence)
Adam: (recovering) is there a particular edition you need?
Dumb lady: huh?....is it a new book? (swear to god)
Adam: (shocked silence)
Dumb lady: do you have that book?
Adam: (in best condescending voice) well ma'am..they are two separate epic poems from Ancient Greece told by the poet Homer, which were translated dozens of different times and offered in many different editions...are you looking for a specific translation?
Dumb lady: (in offended but still dumb voice) thanks (hangs up)
Adam: what the fuck?!

my new best work story....which beat out the time when a hot but empty-headed UT girl walked up to me and asked where the Spanish language books were? I told her and offered to show her to which she replied "Oh thanks, I've never been in a place like this before."
...a place like this before? its A BOOKSTORE not a damn tittie bar...

goodbye Leo

One of my favorite actors on one of my all-time favorite shows died today. John Spencer who played White House Chief of Staff Leo McGarry (and current Vice-President candidate) on the West Wing died of a heart attack at 58, he would have been 59 next week. In a sad bit of irony his character was forced from his White House job last season after suffering a near-fatal heart attack. Spencer was a classy, gifted actor whose character was the most steady and loyal person on the show. I really enjoyed Spencer in all the other roles I have seen him in, including playing FBI Director Womak in The Rock. West Wing will never been the same without him.
